Oil price surged

OPEC+stick to an existing pact for a gradual increase in oil output, oil price surged.

West Texas Intermediate crude surged up US$1.87 or 2.47% to US$77.59/barrel, the highest since 2014. Brent Crude surged US$2.13 or 2.69% to a three-year high of US$81.27/barrel.

Facebook services offline

Facebook’s social media services Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram went down for 6 hours, now backed online. Facebook share down more than 5% intraday.

A former Facebook whistleblower has revealed her identity, accusing Facebook of prioritizing growth over safety.

US stocks

The S&P 500 fell 1.30%, hitting a new closing low since July 19. The Dow Jones fell 0.94%. The Nasdaq fell 2.14%.

The S&P/ASX200 is lower today, dropping 60.40 points or 0.83% to 7,218.10. The bottom performing stocks in this index are IDP EDUCATION LIMITED and AFTERPAY LIMITED, down 5.87% and 5.20% respectively.

Record trade surplus

ABS report a record trade surplus in August of $15 billion, an increase of $2.4 billion on July, due to strong energy demand and cereal needs.
